What is Maroc Telecom?
Maroc Telecom (Itissalat Al-Maghrib) is Morocco's largest mobile operator by subscribers, with the widest network reach across the country. Alongside Orange Morocco and inwi, it is one of the three main carriers. If you have read about mobile coverage in Morocco, you have almost certainly seen Maroc Telecom named as the network with the best rural and desert coverage.
For a traveller, that matters because the network your phone connects to determines whether you have signal on the road to Merzouga, in the High Atlas, or along the coast south of Agadir. Our Morocco network coverage guide breaks this down region by region.
Can you get a Maroc Telecom eSIM as a visitor?
This is the question most people are really asking. The honest answer is: it depends, and it is not the simplest route.
Moroccan carriers have been slower than European or Gulf operators to offer eSIM to prepaid visitors. What is available in a Maroc Telecom shop in Casablanca or Marrakech may differ from what is advertised online, and tourist-focused eSIM products from the Moroccan carriers themselves are not consistently offered. Rather than promise something we cannot verify, we will say plainly: if you want the certainty of an eSIM you can install before you fly and activate on landing, a travel eSIM is the reliable choice.
A travel eSIM does not replace Maroc Telecom. It connects to it. When you install a Morocco eSIM from a travel provider, your phone registers on one of the Moroccan networks — typically Maroc Telecom where it is strongest — and you get data without visiting a shop.
Maroc Telecom eSIM vs a travel eSIM: the decision
| Maroc Telecom eSIM (visitor) | Travel eSIM for Morocco | |
|---|---|---|
| Where to buy | Maroc Telecom shop in Morocco | Online, before you travel |
| Install before flying | Not reliably | Yes |
| ID registration | Passport required in shop | Not required |
| Network used | Maroc Telecom | Connects to Moroccan networks, including Maroc Telecom |
| Best for | Longer stays, residents | Short trips, arrivals, multi-country travel |
| Language of support | French/Arabic in shop | Your language, via the provider's help centre |
If you are in Morocco for weeks or months, a local SIM or a Maroc Telecom contract may make sense. If you are visiting for days, the travel eSIM wins on convenience every time.
What to buy instead
The Morocco eSIM from BaobabSIM is built for exactly this trip. You choose a data plan, install it before you fly, and it connects to Moroccan networks on arrival — no shop queue, no passport photocopy, no language barrier at the counter. You can see the Morocco eSIM plans here.
If you are unsure how much data you need, our guide to how much data you need for a trip walks through it by trip length and usage. For most one-week Morocco trips, a mid-range plan covers maps, messaging, and the occasional upload.
Arriving at Marrakech or Casablanca
If you land at Marrakech Menara, you will see SIM card counters in the arrivals hall. They sell physical SIMs, and the process involves your passport and a wait. Our Marrakech Airport SIM card guide explains what is on offer and what to do instead.
The advantage of an eSIM is that you can skip that entirely. Install it at home, switch it on when the plane lands, and your data is live before you reach the taxi rank. If you have never used one, our what is an eSIM guide covers installation and phone compatibility.
Coverage beyond the cities
Maroc Telecom's reputation is built on reach outside the big cities. If your itinerary includes the Todra Gorge, the Dades Valley, or the desert routes, you will spend time on roads where only one network has signal. Our Todra Gorge guide covers what to expect on that stretch.
A travel eSIM that connects to Maroc Telecom gives you the same network advantage without the shop visit. Your phone will select the strongest available network, which in most of rural Morocco means Maroc Telecom.
Practical checklist before you fly
- Check your phone supports eSIM (most recent iPhones, Samsung Galaxy, and Google Pixel models do).
- Buy your Morocco eSIM before departure.
- Install it while you still have home Wi-Fi.
- Turn on data roaming for the eSIM line only — this is normal for travel eSIMs and does not incur roaming charges on your home SIM.
- Keep your home SIM active for calls and texts if you need them.
If you run into trouble, the BaobabSIM help centre has setup and troubleshooting guides. If you have lost your order email, contact support through the help centre — order links are sent by email and are not available through a public lookup page.
