Morocco eSIM

Local plans on Orange Maroc’s own network, so you land in Marrakech or Casablanca already connected, as a local line rather than a roaming visitor. Regional plans add other African countries.

Short answer

With a local plan, a BaobabSIM eSIM for Morocco runs on Orange Maroc, one of the country’s three networks, so your phone connects as a Moroccan line and not as roaming; with a regional plan, it also covers other African countries through a partner network in each. Install it at home on Wi-Fi and switch it on when you land. The alternative is a local SIM from Maroc Telecom or Orange, 20 dirhams with 20 dirhams of credit, bought with your passport.

Morocco’s three networks

Morocco has three mobile networks, and all three launched 5G in the main cities on 7 November 2025. Our local plans run on Orange Maroc.

  • Maroc Telecom

The network whose legal name is Itissalat Al-Maghrib, which is why its website is iam.ma. It sells prepaid SIM cards and eSIMs in its shops.

  • Orange Maroc

    Our plans run here

Run by Médi Telecom, known as Méditel until December 2016. Our Morocco plans are lines on this network.

  • inwi

Run by Wana Corporate. It sells prepaid SIM cards, and an eSIM pack in its own shops.

Where you will travel

Coverage is strong in the cities and thins out in the desert and the mountains.

Marrakech, Casablanca, Rabat, Fes, Tangier and Agadir
The six host cities of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations were among the first with 5G, launched on all three networks on 7 November 2025. The regulator counted 44% of the population covered by 5G at the end of March 2026.
Essaouira, Chefchaouen, Ouarzazate and Zagora
Orange Maroc lists these towns among those covered by its 5G network.
The Sahara and the High Atlas
Coverage is thinner in the desert and in remote mountain villages, and Wi-Fi in desert camps is often patchy. Download maps and offline translations before you leave the towns.
The ferry from Spain
The EU’s roam-like-at-home rules do not cover Morocco, so check what your own plan charges there before the crossing. Switch the eSIM on when you arrive in Tangier.

Arriving in Morocco

The airports sell local SIM cards, and a local SIM needs your passport: Morocco has required buyers to be identified since 1 April 2014. With the eSIM installed at home, you can walk past the counters.

  • RAK

    Marrakech Menara

Orange, Maroc Telecom and inwi have counters near arrivals, after customs.

  • CMN

    Casablanca Mohammed V

The airport lists shops for Maroc Telecom, inwi and Orange.

Install before you fly

Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi before you fly, and keep the line switched off. When you land in Marrakech, Casablanca or Tangier, switch it on and choose it for mobile data. A local plan connects as an Orange Maroc line, a regional plan through a partner network, and your usual SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts. If mobile data does not start, turn on data roaming for the eSIM line only.

Questions about eSIM in Morocco

Which eSIM should I get for Morocco?

One that runs on a Moroccan network, if you can. Our local Morocco plans are lines on Orange Maroc, so the phone connects as a local line rather than roaming. Then pick the number of days of your trip and the data you expect to use.

Do I need an eSIM for Morocco?

No, but it saves the airport queue. The alternatives are roaming on your home plan, which the EU’s roam-like-at-home rules do not cover in Morocco, or a local SIM bought after landing with your passport.

How much is a SIM card in Morocco?

A Maroc Telecom prepaid SIM costs 20 dirhams including 20 dirhams of credit, and its data passes start at 10 dirhams for 1 GB over 3 days (Maroc Telecom catalogue, March 2026). Orange Maroc sells a SIM or eSIM for 20 dirhams including 20 dirhams of credit.

Do I need a passport for a SIM card in Morocco?

Yes. Since 1 April 2014 a prepaid SIM in Morocco can only be activated once the buyer’s identity is registered, and visitors use their passport. An eSIM bought online from us needs no registration at a counter.

Is there 5G in Morocco?

Yes. Maroc Telecom, Orange Maroc and inwi launched 5G on 7 November 2025, starting with the main cities. By the end of March 2026 the regulator counted 44% of the population covered.

Will my phone work in the Sahara?

Often, but not everywhere. Coverage is thinner in the desert and in remote High Atlas villages, and Wi-Fi in desert camps is often patchy, so download maps before you leave the towns.
