Driving in South Africa: licences, tolls and petrol stations

South Africa is a country built for a road trip: good highways, cheap petrol, full-service filling stations and scenery that rewards a hire car. It is also a country where driving carries the real risks of the trip, because the buses, the pedestrians, the animals and the unlit rural roads all demand more attention than European driving does.

Trả lời ngắn

Driving in South Africa is on the left, and visitors can drive on a valid foreign licence, ideally with an international driving permit, which must be carried with it. Speed limits are 60 km/h in built-up areas, 100 km/h on rural roads and 120 km/h on motorways, set under the National Road Traffic Act of 1989, and the legal blood alcohol limit is low. Petrol stations are attended, most routes take cards, and tolls are collected on the main highways either at plazas or by electronic gantry.

South Africa is a country that asks to be driven. The distances are long, the main highways are good, petrol is cheap by European standards, and the roads between Cape Town, the Winelands, the Garden Route, the Karoo and the Kruger lowveld connect landscapes that are entirely different from one another. A hire car turns a holiday into three holidays.

It is also the place where the risk in a South African trip actually sits. Road deaths here are high, and the reasons are specific: pedestrians and animals on unlit rural roads, minibus taxis that stop without warning, long straight highways that invite speed, and heavy trucks. Everything below is about managing that, and none of it is difficult.

Licences, age and the paperwork

You drive on the left, and you can do it on a valid licence from your own country provided it is in English. An international driving permit is recommended and some hire companies require it, so carry both together and take the physical card rather than a photograph of it. Hire companies usually set a minimum age of 21 or 23 and charge an extra daily fee to drivers under 25, and the excess on the insurance is the number to look at when you sign rather than the daily rate.

Speeds, alcohol and the law

The general limits are 60 km/h in built-up areas, 100 km/h on rural roads and 120 km/h on motorways, set under the National Road Traffic Act of 1989 and posted in twenty kilometre increments. Trucks and vehicles towing have lower limits, and a few motorways have minimum speeds. Cameras and average-speed sections are widespread, and fines are routed to the hire company, which passes them on with an administration charge.

The alcohol limit is low, the police run roadside checks, and the penalties are severe. The rule that works is the same as anywhere: if you are driving, you are not drinking, and on a wine tour that means a booked driver rather than a spitting contest.

Petrol, tolls and the practical rhythm

Petrol stations are full service by default: pull in, an attendant fills the tank, cleans the windscreen, checks the water if you ask, and takes payment by card at the pump or inside. A few rand is the tip. Most are open late, many twenty-four hours, and the attached shop sells coffee, biltong, cold drinks and the enormous bags of ice that South Africans buy for a braai.

Tolls are collected on the main long-distance routes, either at staffed plazas where cash and card both work or at electronic gantries. Most hire cars come with a tag or an arrangement with the rental company, and the charges appear on your final bill, which is the least effort. Keep a few notes for the plazas anyway, because a queue at a toll booth is not the place to discover that your card is being declined.

The hazards, and the habits that answer them

Driving at night is the thing to avoid. Rural roads are unlit and carry pedestrians in dark clothing, stray cattle and goats, slow trucks without lights and the occasional pothole the size of a wheel. If you have to drive after dark, reduce speed, use high beams where there is no traffic, and watch the verge rather than the middle of the road.

In the cities, the habits are the ones every South African follows. Lock the doors and keep the windows up in slow traffic. Leave a car’s length between you and the vehicle in front at night, so that you always have somewhere to go. Never leave a bag, a phone or a laptop visible on a seat. Park in attended car parks and tip the car guard. And do not stop for anyone on an isolated road who waves you down; drive to the next town and report it instead.

Cross-border, and the trips that need more paperwork

Driving into Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique or Eswatini is possible and popular, and it needs more than a car. You need written permission from the hire company to take the vehicle across a border, third-party insurance for the destination country, the vehicle registration papers, and a letter confirming that the rental company allows the crossing. Some companies refuse altogether, so arrange it when you book rather than at the border post, where the answer is always no.

Driving in South Africa is one of the pleasures of the trip and one of its risks, and the two are separated by a small set of habits: daylight where you can, doors locked, nothing on show, no stopping for strangers, and a booked driver on the days you are tasting wine. Follow them and the road trip will be the part of the holiday you talk about.

Du khách thường hỏi

Do you need an international driving permit?

You can drive on a valid licence from your own country if it is in English, and an international driving permit is recommended and sometimes required by hire companies, so carry both together. Bring the physical licence rather than a photograph of it, take the permit with you if you have one, and check the hire age limits, which are often 21 or 23 with an extra daily fee for drivers under 25.

What are the speed limits?

Sixty kilometres an hour in built-up areas, one hundred on rural roads and one hundred and twenty on motorways, posted in twenty kilometre steps, all set under the National Road Traffic Act of 1989. There are lower limits for trucks and vehicles towing, and occasionally minimum speeds on motorways. Speed cameras and average-speed sections are common, and fines follow a hire car back to the rental company.

How do the tolls work?

The main long-distance routes, including the N1, N2, N3 and the Garden Route, have toll plazas where you pay in cash or by card, and some sections use electronic gantries. Most hire cars come with a tag or an arrangement, and the charge appears on your final bill, which is the easiest version. Keep small notes handy for the plazas anyway.

What is a South African petrol station like?

Full service by default: an attendant fills the tank and cleans the windscreen, and you tip a few rand. Almost all accept cards, many are open twenty-four hours on the main routes, and the shop is usually a decent place to buy coffee, biltong and cold drinks. Petrol is cheaper than in Europe, and diesel and unleaded are clearly labelled.

Is it safe to drive at night?

It is the one thing to avoid where you can. Rural roads are unlit and carry pedestrians, stray animals and unroadworthy trucks; the highways have fast traffic and long distances. If you must drive after dark, lock the doors, keep the windows up, leave a gap to the car in front so you always have an exit, and never stop for anybody waving you down on an isolated road.
